These writers do not only change words in and out, they understand which pieces of the essay should be changed in order to fit the purpose of the work (82). Experienced writers take their audience into consideration. Recursive revision strategy involves a first draft that are messy but that express what they will write about, and a second draft which will be figured out what will be kept and what will be changed in the essay (82). Recursive revision strategies are used by the Experienced writers in Sommer’s essay. In other words, if the student knows what they want to say in the paper they feel that there is no need for revision. Sommer realized student writers will think they do not need to revise a work if they are inspired by the subject or if writing comes easily. Student’s idea of re writing an essay is to change words that are not needed, yet they can still repeat ideas in different phrases still making the essay redundant. Students tend to focus on certain words in the text, not taking into consideration their role in the essay (78).
One student thought “reviewing means just using better words and eliminating words that are not needed” (78). The student writers’ idea of revisions in their essays were word and phrase changes. Linear revision strategy fails to include actual revisions. In this strategy, the writers who usually follow these rules are considered “Student” writers in Sommer’s essay. Sommers definition of of a linear revision strategy is one that involves three steps, pre-writing, writing, and rewriting (75).
